Juniors

The first season of Junior Gridiron in the ACT was played in 1991. At one stage there were as many as nine Junior teams playing in the local competition which was divided into two divisions – High School (ages 14–16) and College (ages 16–18). The current Junior competition is contested in one division by players 18 years old or younger.

The Junior Competition runs alongside the Senior Men’s Competition from October to December. All games are held at Greenway Enclosed Oval, Tuggeranong.

To register your interest in playing or assisting with the development of Junior Gridiron in the ACT please contact us – juniors@actgridiron.com.au

Junior Gridiron is open to all players aged between 14 and 18 (however, you must be 17 on the 31st of July of the year you are intending to participate).

  1. Hi there,

How strict is the 14 year starting age? I have a boy who turns 13 in January who would love to play. If I sign a waiver for insurance is he able to play? We live in the Tuggeranong area if there is a team that has a spot for him.

    Many thanks

    1. Thanks for your enquiry Cheryl

I am not 100% sure on the age 14 eligibility so will follow it up and get back to you here. In the mean time, the closest club to you is the Tuggeranong Tornadoes. They are having a signup day for 11-14 year olds on the next 2 Sundays. The contact details for their club are below.

    2. Hi there,

I am 14 years old and i am interested in playing. I live in Braddon and i am wondering what team is closest to me, and the times that i would play

      Thanks From Ollie

      1. Hi Ollie

As Braddon is near the centre of Canberra you have a number of teams you can choose from. The best thing to do would be to check out the map on our ACT Clubs page to find your nearest team.

The juniors play at 3:30pm and 5:45pm on Saturdays down at Greenway Oval.

    1. Hi Trinity

Yes, girls are able to play in the junior competition as long as they meet the age eligibility requirements. What area do you live in? We should be able to provide you details of your closest club(s).

You can also check out our clubs page here: http://www.actgridiron.com.au/act-clubs/

  2. hi i’m Sam i turn thirteen next year and i live in Goulburn and am wondering can i play next year and where is my nearest club in the ACT

    1. Hi Sam

To be eligible to play juniors you must turn 14 before the 1st of July. If you aren’t eligible to play, you may be able to get involved with a club to learn the game etc until you reach the eligibility requirement.

The closest club to Goulburn is the Gungahlin Wildcats in the North Side of Canberra. The UC Firebirds are also based on the North Side.

Check out our clubs page to see what club suits you best

  3. hi my name is Abraham and I just moved from the united states and I was wondering when does the season start and age groups or weight groups it goes by.

    1. Hi Abraham

Our Junior season starts on Saturday the 10th of October and runs until the 12th of December. We don’t have any weight groups but the age eligibility is 14-18. What area of Canberra do you live in?

You can check out our clubs page to see which club you would like to join.

  4. hey my names Luke I am 15 years old and wondering if i can sing of for one of the teams if so what requirements do i need and how much. my area is the tuggeranong region. please get back to me.

  5. Hey there, i was just wondering if my son would be eligible to play juniors next season. The only thing is im confused about the age grouping. He turns 18 on jan 7th. So would that mean he would have to play senior?

    1. Hi Bobby

As the junior season is in the second half of the year, the eligibility requirements for juniors are that the player must be at least 14 and under 18 years of age on June 1st of the year of the tournament. Since your son will be 18 on January, he will no longer be eligible for juniors.

    1. Hi Steve
When does your son turn 14? To be eligible for the junior competition, players must be 14 on the 1st of July.
Also, what area do you live in?

  6. Hi I’m Maddocks and I turn 13 this year and really want to play N.F.L I know you have to be 14-18 but I was just wondering if when you play do you play with just the 14 year olds and then just the 15 year olds or are the teams mixed with 14 and 18 year olds in one game.

    1. Hi Maddocks
The junior competition has 14-18 year olds playing together for each team. Unfortunately we do not have a large enough player base at the moment to have individual age groups.

  7. Hi guys,

I’m 14 and I was wondering which team would be closest to Batemans Bay.

    I’m a good receiver, 5″11, and can run 100 m fairly fast.

    1. Hi Braith

Check out our Clubs page for the contact details of all our clubs. Coming from Batemans Bay, the closest club depends on which way you come into Canberra. If you come in from the North, the Wildcats or Firebirds would be closest, if you come in from the West, the Centurions, Gladiators or the Spears would be your closest.

  8. Hi ACT Gridiron
I am very interested in playing gridiron next season, however I have no experience of playing the sport at all. I have a basic understanding, having watched NFL before. I am not at all large physically, so I was wondering if I would still be able to play. I live in Hawker, Belconnen. I was also wondering when the season starts, ends and when the training commitments are. I am 15 years old. Thank you.

  9. Hi there,
I am in year 11 this year (turning 17) and next year obviously 18 and was wondering if there was a team near belconnen!
At the moment im playing Soccer but i have an interest in American Football!
    thanks

    1. Hi Braith

Coming in via Queanbeyan, the closest clubs will be the Centurions, Gladiators or the Spears. As far as positions that are available, you’d have to talk to the club you’re interested in to find out what position you would play. Details for the clubs are below:

  10. Hi guys, as a player, would I have to play both offence and defence? And as a 15 year old, would I be on the fild as much as the older players?

    1. Hi Braith
Sorry it took so long to respond, for some reason we didn’t get notified of the message. To answer your question, it depends on the team and what position you are in. All teams try to get game time for all their players. It’d be best to contact the club you’re interested in playing with and see what they say

  11. Hi I am just wondering which teams are closest to the Weston Creek area and also when the clubs start taking on new players for the 2017 season

    1. Hi Josh

All clubs start recruiting for players at different times during the year. Most of them start in February-May but there is still time to get in on this season, which is only 3 weeks in. Check out the ACTG Clubs page, there is a helpful map on it to help you find your closest club

  12. Hi, I was wondering if all gear would be supplied if not what will I have to get for myself.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Ollie

All clubs differ slightly but usually all you have to provide is boots, socks and a mouthguard. All clubs have gear and they will either rent it out to you or it will be part of their registration fees

  13. Hi i am just wondering what days would training be and i am of 14 years of age how much game time will i get. And what club is closest to me as i live in western creek
